good friday was good for us

i had a neat conversation with a pre-christian friend the other day.  he said, “hey, randy, i just found out i get off work for good friday.  what is good friday, anyway?”

not being the kind of guy to pass on such an opportunity, i told him the story of the gospel: how god sent his son to redeem israel but they rejected him as messiah, how jesus spent his last week on earth at the passover celebration in jerusalem reaching out to outcasts and misfits, and how the legalists finally got so fed up with jesus they killed him.  i explained that jesus was executed on the day we celebrate as good friday, and easter sunday is the day the church designated to commemorate jesus’ resurrection from the dead.

with a troubled look on his face, my friend asked, “if good friday was the day that jesus died, then why do we call it good?”

i was delighted to tell him, “because it was really good for me, and it was really good for you.”
